Greydon’s Bedroom

When we set out to give our son a new room, we wanted it to be simple, functional, and cool, as is our usual MO when designing a space. In addition to that, another thing we aim for is incorporating sentimental pieces – and all of that was achieved in the final product that our son has been living in and loving for a few months now!

Firstly, we started this reno by ripping off the old trim to prep for paint. We intended to paint the walls and re-trim with the wider flat white MDF for a more updated look. When we started ripping off the old trim, we discovered there were gorgeous wide-plank hardwood floors, original to our 1901 farmhouse! We excitedly researched the best ways to paint these beautiful floors and we are really happy with the way they turned out. This room has been finished for about 6 months now and the floor is holding up incredibly well and is easy to wipe clean in the high traffic spots.

Our next exciting project in this room was the floating bed. Made from walnut wood and affixed with cables anchored into the wall, it truly is a unique touch that is modern and very simple in design.

The rest of the room got a fresh coat of paint in one of our favorite grey tones: Icy Avalanche, distressed wood window sills to match the rest of the wood, shades, and the cozy details to make the room a warm inviting space. Most of the decor is more than just for show, the pieces we chose hold a special place in our hearts that make the room so personal, which is very important in our designs. The dresser belonged to me as a child, which also belonged to my mother in childhood. The ski’s hanging on the wall were the very pair that Ross’ dad learned to ski on as a teenager at the family cottage, and were our favorite way to spend summer cottage afternoons for as long as we can remember. The old wooden beechwood perched in the corner was a piece that Ross and I fished out of the water’s edge where our first house used to be near Lake Macatawa, Holland MI.

In all, this room turned out better than we had hoped and we are so happy with the simplicity and warmth in this inviting space.

Basement Splash

In this basement remodel, we provided the backsplash. I love working with contrasting materials and those that appreciate simple design.

What’s in a name?

When my wife and I sat down to think of what to call ourselves, we knew it had to be simple. When trying to pack meaning into a few words, or even one word, it can be difficult. We primarily work with wood and we cherish our faith in Christ, so we wanted a simple way to combine these. Lignum vitae is said to be the densest wood traded. The name resounds strength and durability. In latin, lignum vitae means “wood of life” or “tree of life.” For us, this echoes back to the garden of eden and the hope of redemption. Our company name is strong, durable, and rich in meaning. In our products as well as our projects, we seek to promote a simpler, more enriched lifestyle. At Lignum, our hope is to share our vision of stewarding well the skills and materials provided by our Creator, in service of you.
